English Conversation Practice – Discussing Hobbies and Interests

Emma: Hey, Sarah! How’s it going?

Sarah: Not too bad, thanks. How about you, Emma?

Emma: I’m doing well. So, I’ve been thinking about picking up a new hobby lately. Do you have any hobbies or interests that you’re really passionate about?

Sarah: Oh, definitely! I love photography. It’s something I picked up a few years ago, and now it’s become one of my favorite things to do in my free time. What about you? Do you have any hobbies?

Emma: That’s awesome. Photography sounds like such a creative outlet. I used to dabble in painting, but I haven’t done it in ages. Lately, I’ve been more into reading—mainly fiction. But I feel like I need something more active to balance it out.

Sarah: Reading is great, though! Especially fiction—it really helps you escape into different worlds. But yeah, I get what you mean about needing something active. Have you thought about anything specific?

Emma: Well, I’ve considered maybe trying out hiking. I love being outdoors, and there are so many trails around here. Plus, it’s a good workout without feeling like one, you know?

Sarah: Absolutely! Hiking is fantastic for both physical and mental health. Being surrounded by nature has this calming effect. I actually bring my camera with me on hikes sometimes—it’s a great way to combine two interests.

Emma: That sounds perfect. Do you ever find it hard to balance your hobbies with work and other responsibilities? Sometimes I feel guilty spending time on myself when there’s so much else to do.

Sarah: Totally understand that feeling. Honestly, I think it’s all about prioritizing self-care. If we don’t make time for things we enjoy, life can start feeling pretty monotonous. For example, if I go too long without taking photos, I notice I’m not as energized or motivated in other areas of my life.

Emma: That makes sense. Maybe I just need to schedule some “me-time” into my week, like setting aside an hour or two specifically for hiking or even restarting painting. It doesn’t have to be every day, right?

Sarah: Exactly. Even small chunks of time can make a big difference. Like, I try to carve out at least 30 minutes a day for editing pictures or planning shoots. It keeps me connected to my passion without overwhelming my schedule.

Emma: Hmm, planning sounds helpful. Speaking of which, do you have any tips for someone who wants to start hiking? Any gear or apps you’d recommend?

Sarah: Sure thing! First off, invest in a good pair of hiking shoes—they’ll save your feet from blisters. As for apps, I use AllTrails; it shows trail maps, difficulty levels, and user reviews. And don’t forget water, snacks, and sunscreen!

Emma: Got it. Those sound like practical suggestions. I’ll check out AllTrails and see which trails are beginner-friendly. Hopefully, I can convince some friends to join me—it’s always more fun with company.

Sarah: Definitely! Group activities are a great way to stay consistent. Plus, sharing experiences makes them more memorable. Who knows? Maybe you’ll inspire others to take up hiking too!

Emma: True. It could turn into a regular thing. Thanks for the advice, by the way. This conversation has given me a lot to think about—and hopefully act on soon!

Sarah: No problem at all! Let me know how it goes once you start hiking. Maybe we can swap stories sometime—you can tell me about your adventures, and I’ll share some of my favorite photo spots.

Emma: Deal! Looking forward to it. Alright, catch you later?

Sarah: Catch you later!
