English Conversation Practice – Ordering Food at a Restaurant

Characters:

  • Anna – A customer
  • James – A waiter

Scene: A cozy, mid-range Italian restaurant during lunch hour.

James: Good afternoon! Welcome to Bella Italia. Table for one?

Anna: Yes, please.

James: Right this way. Here’s your menu. Can I get you started with something to drink?

Anna: Sure, I’ll have a glass of sparkling water, please.

James: Absolutely. I’ll be right back with that. (returns with the drink) Here you go. Are you ready to order, or would you like a few more minutes?

Anna: I think I’m ready. What do you recommend?

James: Our most popular dish is the Chicken Alfredo Pasta. It’s creamy, rich, and made fresh. If you’re looking for something lighter, the grilled salmon with vegetables is also a great choice.

Anna: Hmm… both sound good. Is the Chicken Alfredo too heavy for lunch?

James: It is on the richer side, but we offer a half-portion if you’d prefer something lighter.

Anna: Oh, perfect! I’ll go with the half-portion of the Chicken Alfredo.

James: Great choice. Would you like a side salad or soup with that?

Anna: Salad, please. What kind of dressing do you have?

James: We have Italian, ranch, balsamic vinaigrette, and Caesar.

Anna: I’ll take balsamic vinaigrette, please.

James: Excellent. Would you like some fresh bread with your meal?

Anna: Yes, that would be nice. Thank you!

(After a few minutes, James returns with the salad and bread.)

James: Here’s your salad and fresh bread. Your pasta will be out shortly. Let me know if you need anything else.

Anna: This looks great. Thank you!

(After the meal arrives and Anna finishes eating.)

James: How was everything?

Anna: It was delicious! The pasta was just the right portion, and the sauce was amazing.

James: I’m glad to hear that! Would you like to see the dessert menu?

Anna: Hmm… maybe just a coffee. Do you serve cappuccino?

James: We do. One cappuccino coming right up.

(A few minutes later.)

James: Here you go. Enjoy!

Anna: Thanks. This is exactly what I needed after a good meal.

(After finishing the coffee.)

Anna: Could I get the check, please?

James: Of course. Here you go. You can pay whenever you’re ready.

Anna: Do you accept cards?

James: Yes, we take all major credit and debit cards.

Anna: Perfect. Here you go.

James: Thank you. I’ll be right back with your receipt. (returns) Thanks again for dining with us. Have a wonderful day!

Anna: You too. Thanks for the great service!
