English Conversation Practice – First Day at the Gym

Characters:
Emma – starting her fitness journey
Jake – regular gym-goer and Emma’s coworker

Emma: Hey Jake, can I ask you something a little random?

Jake: Of course! What’s up?

Emma: So… I just joined the gym yesterday. And I’m going tonight for the first time, but I have no idea what I’m doing.

Jake: No way! That’s awesome! Congrats! Everyone starts somewhere, trust me. Which gym did you join?

Emma: That one near the office — FitZone. You go there, right?

Jake: Yup! It’s a good place. Clean, friendly staff, and not too packed during evenings. When are you going?

Emma: Around 6:30, right after work. Is that a bad time?

Jake: It’s a little busy, but not terrible. You’ll be fine. Do you have a plan or are you just going to explore?

Emma: That’s the thing… I don’t have a clue. I just know I want to get stronger and healthier. Maybe tone up a bit.

Jake: Gotcha. I’d say start with something simple — maybe 10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then some beginner strength machines.

Emma: Machines scare me a little. What if I use them wrong?

Jake: Totally normal. Honestly, most machines have instructions on them. But if you ever feel unsure, just ask a trainer. They’re super helpful.

Emma: I’m worried I’ll look like I don’t belong there.

Jake: I felt the same way on my first day. But the truth is, no one’s really watching you. Everyone’s focused on their own workout.

Emma: That’s comforting. Do you think I should take a class instead?

Jake: That’s actually a great idea. FitZone has beginner classes like bodyweight circuits or yoga. It’s a good way to ease in.

Emma: Maybe I’ll try yoga on Friday. For tonight, I’ll just walk on the treadmill and do some light weights?

Jake: That’s perfect. Keep it simple and don’t overdo it. Your muscles will thank you tomorrow.

Emma: Or hate me. I already bought a foam roller just in case.

Jake: Smart move! Recovery is key. Also — stay hydrated, and don’t skip stretching after.

Emma: Got it. I actually feel a little excited now. Thanks, Jake!

Jake: No problem at all. If you ever want a gym buddy, let me know. I usually go around the same time.

Emma: Really? That would be awesome. I think I’d feel more confident with someone around.

Jake: Cool. Let’s plan for tomorrow then?

Emma: Yes! Just don’t laugh if I can’t lift anything heavier than a water bottle.

Jake: No judgment here. You’re showing up — that’s what matters most.

Emma: Thanks again, Jake. I’ll text you after tonight’s workout — wish me luck!

Jake: Good luck, Emma! You’ve got this.
