English Conversation Practice – Favorite Books and Reading Habits

Emma: Hey, John! I was thinking about reading a new book this weekend. Do you have any book recommendations?

John: Hey, Emma! Oh, I love talking about books. What kind of genres do you usually enjoy?

Emma: I’m mostly into fiction, especially fantasy or mystery. I like getting lost in another world, you know? What about you, John? Any genres you prefer?

John: I’m definitely more of a non-fiction person, especially history and biographies. I find it fascinating to learn about real-life events and people. But I do like a good thriller every now and then. Have you read anything recently that stood out?

Emma: Actually, yes! I just finished The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. It’s a magical, mysterious story about a circus that only opens at night. The writing is so vivid—it felt like I was right there. I loved it! Have you read anything lately?

John: That sounds intriguing! I’ve heard of it, but I haven’t read it yet. I’m currently reading a biography about Winston Churchill. It’s a bit heavy at times, but it’s also so inspiring to learn about his leadership during such challenging times. Do you prefer standalone books or series?

Emma: I like both, but I think I lean more toward series. There’s something exciting about following characters over multiple books. I’m currently reading A Song of Ice and Fire—the series that inspired Game of Thrones. It’s so detailed and intricate. Do you ever get into long series, John?

John: I used to be really into series, but lately, I’ve found myself gravitating more toward standalones. I think it’s because I like finishing a book in one go without waiting for the next one. But I’ll make an exception for a really good series. By the way, how do you find time to read, Emma? With everything going on, it can be tough.

Emma: Yeah, it definitely can be tough to make time. I try to carve out 30 minutes each day, usually before bed. It’s my way of winding down. I also listen to audiobooks when I’m commuting. What about you, John? Do you have a set reading routine?

John: That’s a good way to sneak in some reading! I usually read in the evenings too, but I’ve been trying to wake up earlier and read in the morning. It helps me start the day on a calm note. Audiobooks are great, though! I’ve been thinking about giving them a try. How do you feel about audiobooks compared to physical books?

Emma: I love audiobooks when I’m on the go, but there’s something special about holding a physical book and turning the pages. Audiobooks are great for multitasking, but I think physical books have a deeper connection for me. Do you prefer physical books, or are you open to e-books as well?

John: I totally agree. There’s just something about the experience of reading a physical book. But I’ve also been getting into e-books lately. It’s nice to carry a whole library around on my tablet, especially when I travel. I think I’ve read more e-books than physical books this year, actually. Do you have a favorite book of all time?

Emma: That’s a tough question! But if I had to pick, I’d say Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is probably my all-time favorite. It was the first book that really got me into reading when I was younger, and it still holds a special place in my heart. What about you, John? Do you have a favorite?

John: Harry Potter is such a classic! It definitely has that magical quality that sticks with you. For me, I think it would have to be Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari. It’s not a typical choice, but it completely changed the way I view history and humanity. It’s one of those books that really makes you think.

Emma: That sounds fascinating! I’ve seen it mentioned a lot, but I haven’t read it yet. I’m definitely adding it to my list now. It’s always interesting when a book can shift your perspective on life. Do you tend to read books with a specific message or just for enjoyment?

John: I think it’s a mix of both for me. I love books that make me think or challenge my views, but I also enjoy reading just for fun. Books are my escape, but they’re also a way to learn. I guess it depends on my mood. Do you prefer books that leave you thinking or ones that give you a sense of closure?

Emma: I think I prefer books that leave me thinking, especially ones that have a bit of mystery or open-endedness to them. I love when a book stays with me after I’ve finished reading it. But I also enjoy a satisfying ending every now and then, especially if it’s a series. Do you ever re-read books, John?

John: I do sometimes, especially if it’s a book that made a big impact on me. I’ve re-read Sapiens a couple of times, and I always notice something new each time. It’s like I’m learning a little bit more with every read. Do you ever re-read books, Emma?

Emma: I do, but not as often as I’d like. I mostly re-read books that I’ve really loved, like The Night Circus. I find that I pick up on new details when I go back to a book, which is always fun. Have you ever read a book that completely changed the way you think?

John: Definitely. Sapiens was one of those for me. It made me question a lot of things about human history and society. It’s fascinating how books can do that. For you, has there been a book that really changed your perspective on something?

Emma: I’d say The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It’s all about following your dreams and listening to your heart, and it really made me think about my own life and the path I want to take. It’s one of those books that feels like a guide for life. Have you ever read that one, John?

John: I’ve heard of it, but I haven’t read it yet. It sounds like it would be a really inspiring read. I’ll definitely add it to my list. It’s amazing how books can influence our thoughts and decisions, isn’t it?

Emma: It really is! Books have such a power to change us in subtle ways. I feel like every book we read shapes us in some way, even if we don’t always realize it at the time.

John: I couldn’t agree more, Emma. It’s one of the reasons I love reading so much. It’s like each book leaves a mark on your mind.

Emma: Exactly! Well, I think I’ve got a good list of books to check out now. Thanks for the great conversation, John. It was fun hearing about your reading habits!

John: Same to you, Emma! I always enjoy talking about books. Let’s definitely chat again soon about what we’re reading. Have a great time with your next read!

Emma: You too, John! Happy reading!
